Abstract

The first section of this comment details the varied backgrounds of these issues, including the history of Nicaragua and its canal ambitions from the Columbian era to the present day, the Monroe Doctrine and the U.S. interventions in Latin America, the rise of Chinese neocolonialism in the Western Hemisphere, and U.S. interests in preventing Chinese expansionism and reengaging Latin America in a proactive, mutually-beneficial manner.

The second part of this comment details proposed solutions to the issues identified in the first part, outlining short-term and long-term objectives and the means to accomplish such.
